Two Years of Self-Employment: Reflections on Life as Your Own Boss

My last official day at my day job was October 11, 2013. It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I left that old desk. Becoming self-employed has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I highly recommend being your own boss!

I now run a successful business, love my life, control my future, and have the freedom to travel whenever I want. If that’s not amazing, I don’t know what is.

For those new here, I used to work as an analyst at an investment banking and valuation firm. My job was the typical 8-5 grind, Monday through Friday, and I didn’t see a fun future there. It was stressful, filled with deadlines and responsibilities that didn’t interest me.

Life is fantastic now! I love everything about self-employment and blogging. I’m still thrilled I took the leap, and I can’t imagine life any other way. Call me spoiled or happy, I don’t care. Life is good, and I believe many others can achieve the same.

Here’s an update on my life since becoming self-employed two years ago:

I enjoy being my own boss. I love having complete control over what I do, creating my own schedule, setting business goals, and handling everything behind the scenes. I have a rule: I don’t do anything I don’t want to do. This has improved my work-life balance immensely.

I love my business. I enjoy every service I provide, from writing and promoting to networking and interacting with readers. Running an online business might not be for everyone, but it’s something I truly enjoy.

Working from home is fantastic. I don’t have a commute, so I can wake up and start working right away. This gives me more time to enjoy life. Since I love what I do, waking up in the morning is no longer a chore.

Having access to my fridge all day hasn’t been a problem. I’ve gained a little weight, but it’s manageable. I thought I’d snack all day, but I control myself most of the time.

Self-employment means a flexible schedule. I can work whenever I want, whether it’s in the morning, at night, or on weekends. I can fit in activities like hiking or lunch with friends during the day and work later if needed.

Being location independent is amazing. I can work from anywhere as long as I have an internet connection and my laptop. However, it can be hard to separate work from life completely, but I’m not complaining.

My social life has improved. At my old job, I didn’t have much in common with my colleagues. Now, I talk to multiple people daily, including my partner Wes, friends, and blogging buddies. My social life is much better.

Do you have any questions about self-employment? Are you interested in becoming your own boss? Why or why not?
