Securing Remote Income with Search Engine Evaluator Positions

Hey there! Today, I want to share a side hustle that can help you make some extra money: working as a Search Engine Evaluator or Quality Rater for Google.

Since leaving my corporate job in 2016, I’ve been working online as a Google Rater for over three years, and I document my journey on my blog, OutsideThatCubicle.com. I also offer a Search Engine Evaluator Training course to help you pass the qualification test and start working as an evaluator.

How did I get started? In early 2016, I was jobless, depressed, and struggling financially. After losing a job due to illness and facing multiple rejections in interviews, I was in a tough spot. I was living in New Delhi, and expenses were piling up. During this challenging time, I discovered the online job of a search engine evaluator, also known as a Google Rater.

I applied for the position with Leapforce (now Appen) in May 2016. After a rigorous three-part qualification test, I finally passed and started working in June 2016. This job was a lifesaver for me.

So, what does a Search Engine Evaluator do? Essentially, you evaluate the relevance and quality of search engine results based on guidelines provided by Google. You indirectly work for Google, helping improve search results.

To become a search engine evaluator, you need to:
1. Apply to a company that hires Google raters (Google doesn’t hire directly).
2. Pass the qualification test.
3. Complete the necessary paperwork and start working.

The initial requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, cultural awareness of your country, active use of social media, and familiarity with web browsers. You also need a smartphone and a computer.

Here are some common questions about the job:

1. **Where can I work from?**
You can work from anywhere within your country, whether it’s a hotel room, beach, or mountains, as long as your computer screen isn’t visible to others.

2. **Do I need to be technical?**
No, you don’t need technical skills. Just follow the guidelines, and you’re good to go.

3. **Is this position available in other languages?**
Yes, Google hires evaluators in various languages worldwide.

To start, choose a company to work for. The main ones are Appen, Lionbridge, Raterlabs, and iSoftstone. Each has different hiring practices and pay rates.

After choosing a company, you’ll need to pass the qualification test, which is based on a detailed guideline provided by Google. The test is tough, so thorough preparation is essential. Once you pass, you’ll sign the necessary paperwork and officially become a Google Rater.

The pay varies depending on your location. For example, in the U.S., you can earn around $13 per hour, while in Europe, it can be up to $14 per hour.

What do I like about being a Google Rater? Here are a few perks:
– **Freedom:** No boss, no commute, and no fixed working hours.
– **Consistent work:** You can easily clock in 25-50 hours per week.
– **Decent pay:** The pay is good, especially considering the flexibility.
– **Minimal requirements:** You don’t need expensive gadgets or technical expertise.

If you’re an introvert, a stay-at-home parent, or a student looking for extra income, this could be a great opportunity. To help you pass the qualification test, check out my courses.
