Recently, a lot of readers have asked me to share a “Day In The Life” post about my typical day. Although my daily routine varies, I thought it would be fun to track what I do each day. Plus, it might help clear up some misconceptions about what online business owners, freelancers, and bloggers actually do.
Contrary to popular belief, I don’t just lounge around, drink coffee, and scroll through Facebook all day. I actually get a lot of work done! It’s surprising, right?
Writing this post was a bit challenging because my days can be very different. One of the things I love about freelancing is the flexibility—I can create my own schedule. Some days I’m super productive, and other days I might binge-watch Netflix or spend too much time on social media. My workdays can be pretty scattered and messy, making it hard to pinpoint exactly how many hours I work each day.
Here’s a look at my average workday as an online business owner, freelance writer, and blogger:
**8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. – Wake Up**
I usually wake up around 8 a.m. on weekdays. If I worked late the night before, it might be different, but I generally like to start my day early. I stay in bed for about 30 minutes to an hour, checking and replying to emails, browsing Instagram and Facebook, pinning images on Pinterest, and so on.
**9 a.m. – Emails and Breakfast**
Around this time, I get out of bed and let the dogs out. They usually wake up when I do. I feed them and make breakfast, which is often oatmeal with bananas or scrambled eggs with peppers and toast. While eating, I reply to emails and blog comments. My laptop is almost always in front of me during meals.
**10 a.m. – A Little Bit of Work**
After breakfast, I get dressed and put on some makeup. Then, I sit down for about an hour to get some work done. I usually start with replying to emails, as I wake up with at least 50 each morning. If I’m caught up on emails, I read and catch up on my favorite blogs. I spend about an hour or two each day networking and reading blog posts. I also try to schedule phone calls for the early morning to keep the rest of my day open.
**11 a.m. – Work Out**
Around this time, I either go to the rock climbing gym or go for a hike. Lately, I’ve been rock climbing more because of the high temperatures. If I go rock climbing at the gym, I’m usually gone for about two hours. A good morning workout helps clear my mind and keeps me refreshed for the rest of the day.
**1 p.m. – Lunch and Work**
I have lunch around this time and start diving deeper into work. This includes client work, outlining articles, replying to more emails, creating images for blog posts, working on projects, scheduling social media posts, and participating in a mastermind group. I also try to work on an article for my blog each day, which can take many hours or even days to complete.
**4 p.m. – Another Meal and More Work**
It’s time for the next meal. We usually eat four decent-sized meals a day with snacks in between. After eating, I get back to work, often rereading posts I wrote earlier to ensure they’re perfect. I also reply to emails from clients, check on the websites I manage, and more.
**7 p.m. – Dinner and TV**
Dinner time! After eating, I relax by watching a few TV shows. Sometimes, I go for a bike ride to the grocery store if we need anything last-minute.
**9 p.m. – Daily Walk**
As the sun sets, we take our dogs for an hour-long walk. We prefer this time because it’s cooler and more enjoyable. It’s a nice routine that we have.
**10 p.m. – Winding Down for the Night**
I start winding down around this time. I take a shower, put on my pajamas, and maybe watch the news.
**11 p.m. – More Work**
I usually get back into bed around this time but continue working for a few more hours. For some reason, I get the most work done from my bed during these late hours.
Does any of this surprise you? What would you do differently if you had a flexible schedule? What questions do you have about my average workday?
